Lakeview Terrace is an upcoming film set to be released in September 19, 2008.

Plot

In Lakeview Terrace, a young couple Chris Mattson (Patrick Wilson) and Lisa Mattson (Kerry Washington) has just moved into their California dream home when they become the target of their next-door neighbor, who disapproves of their interracial relationship. A stern, single father, this tightly wound LAPD officer Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson) has appointed himself the watchdog of the neighborhood. His nightly foot patrols and overly watchful eyes bring comfort to some, but he becomes increasingly harassing to the newlyweds. These persistent intrusions into their lives ultimately turn tragic when the couple decides to fight back.

This special was one of his earlier routines. It revolved a lot more around the transvestitism than his more recent offerings. He explains transvestitism in a way that seems logical to those of us who don't share the compulsion. He's very articulate and his comedy doesn't really look like him. His comedy is intelligent and while it does occasionally revolve around sexual topics, you never get the impression that he relies on the blue for humor at all. There are two kinds of comedians. There are those who talk about things that are, by general consensus, funny or shocking topics like differences between men and women, or in-laws or feces or sex and then there are comedians who are funny no matter what they are talking about. Eddie Izzard belongs to the second group. I'm sure that if he did a stand-up routine about expense reports it would be a stone riot. With some comedians, when they finish their act, you feel as though you've wasted your time a little. I always feel like the time that I spend watching his stuff is time well spent. I'm to the point now where I will rent any movie or watch any special if it has his name on it.

A contrarian to the end, however, Carlin is going to do what he's going to do, and that's part of his charm.

On wedding anniversaries: "Diamonds--that'll shut her up." Personal Favorites is a greatest-hits package, a selection of some of Carlin's best moments on HBO from 1977 to 1998 and, not coincidentally, some of his most enduring comic routines from any medium. Among the highlights is the satirist's classic "A Place for My Stuff" ("Your house is a pile of stuff with a cover on it"), stupid rules for kids ("The first sign of a dumb rule is 'Because I said so'"), and updating sports rules for fun and profit ("Let the Red Cross pick up the injured"). If some of the bits aren't quite up to par ("Earrings"), others border on folk wisdom (Carlin's brilliant "Baseball vs. Football" monologue) and political rage ("This country was founded by slave owners who wanted to be free"). All in all, this is a very fine anthology of Carlin's two decades of life on cable. --Tom Keogh
